Hi all,

I'm putting together a small backyard flock for eggs. I have lots of room, but I don't want my birds to leave the are I have designated for them. My plan (at this stage) is to use a premier electric fence around the coop and the perimeter of the area for the chickens, but I don't want to the chickens to leave this fence. If you have a better suggestion, please mention it.

I have read that some breeds are better at staying put while others fly quite well.

Also, I live in a very hot Texas climate. We plan to only keep 4 birds.
Also, we have small children.

So then, what's the breed that does well in hot weather, lays eggs readily, isn't as mean to kids, and stays put without much trouble?

My isa browns aren't really flighty. My "unsecure" run is only 5 foot tall with no top and they have never acted like they want out. They were raised in the secure covered run that is 10x20 dog kennel so they grew up not being able to fly out. I then added the unsecure 20x20 run on the front of that to give them more room on pretty days. I'm about a hour south of Little Rock AR and it gets pretty hot here during the summer (triple digits easily) and they lay pretty good. Have a really good temperament.

When they get too old I'm going back to rhode island reds. My granny had those and they were pretty good. They can be a bit aggressive for some people.
