My silkie hen lays every other day and occasionally 2 days back to back. She laid a soft egg Sunday and hasnt laid another since. I have been concerned of egg binding but I hadn't felt an egg in her until this morning.

This is my first time with chickens. I've breed parrots before with no egg laying issues.

I'm very concerned my chickens are pets.

I live in the city too so it us very hard to find a vet with any knowledge aside from cats and dogs.

Any suggestions is greatly appreciated.

if you feel an egg inside her and think she is egg bound you can give her a calcium pill this will help stimulate her to lay. you can also give her a bath to relax her muscles and gently massage her abdomen. you can also give her a bit of lube in the vent but use something that won't go rancid like KY jelly. you can also put her where steam is under her not too hot to burn her but nice so it will relax her muscles. the calcium pill should really help as it stimulates her to lay. you can also carefully help the egg along very gently as you don't want to break the egg. I hope this helps her out. my silkie was off her lay for two months then when she came back into lay she had a difficult time at first. she was head down shaking and panting and straining. luckily she passed that egg thank God. but it was very difficult for her. I really hope these suggestions help and please keep us posted on how she is doing. God bless

Thank you for your help. My sister spoke with the guy we got the chickens from and he suggested that maybe she has just become broody and that the soft egg is nothing to worry about... Everything is making sense cause she seems in good spirits and gets up to eat when I bother her. I think it's just everything happening all at once and my extremely unlucky past with all different creatures has me in a panic. I'm expecting to find an egg when I get home and then this worrying can stop. Thank you!
