Hi there,
I've had flocks of chickens previously, but luckily no problems like this one. I have a brand new flock, all were chicks hatched March or later of this year. There are 10 total, 1 each of mixed breeds (barred rock, ameracauna, brahma, faverolle, Rhode Island red, welsummer, etc) My cuckoo maran just started laying this week. So far, some nice smallish dark brown eggs that seem healthy in every way. Today we went to the egg box and found a brown/reddish gooey mess in the box and pretty large paper thin shell all crumpled up. It's the wrong color to be the Maran's (hers are very dark), and much bigger than the one's she has been laying. So, I'm wondering... What's up with that?! Is one of my chickens sick? Is it an egg problem that will persist? Is it contagious? Thanks in advance, peeps!

Hens that lay thier first egg, will look like that. A first egg is not hard and ready to eat. It will be soft for the shell. It's just a way of the hens body preparing it for harder shells.
She has to lay a few eggs to get to the hard shell stage.
