Egg laying in the winter

I know people who use lights on time switches that work really well for extending their laying throughout the year.
I know it works for quail as well.
I'm guessing they would probably be happier left as they are though if your not too worried about the eggs.

It's cold now and my hens have almost completely stopped laying. My landlord suggested I put lights in the coop to get them to lay. What do you guys think I don't need eggs that bad, I only want my ladies to be as happy and healthy as possible.
How old are your birds, in weeks or months?
It's not the cold, it's the length of day.
Lights can work, and are not detrimental to health if managed properly.
