Egg laying nest

What should I use for the bottom of my egg laying nest? Hay? Sand? Pine? Pine needle?

I use pine shavings.

I prefer straw if you want bedding. I use plastic nest liners, keeps them cleaner. But i also give them a choice to lay in a nest where they can build their nest with straw, half the hens like the liners, the other half likes the straw.

we have ours about 3 feet off the ground, and some on the ground (the chickens made their own nests on the ground). what breeds do you have?
in my experience, silkies nor cochins can get to off the ground nests..

if you have a young kid who would want to help collect though, You can always put it lower.
