Egg laying question

im using buckets for nests, if you do the logs change the hay out a lot! bugs and animals could use it and it will make the chickens uncomfortable.
So what do you think about this - I went to the pet store and got those giant resin logs that lizards use. THe quail love them. THey spend a lot of time in there. Would i need to add some sand to the bottom of the log to encourage egg laying?

You should provide a box with really comfy material, like freshly dug up grass, which has low sides so they can jump in and out, and if a hen broods, put her in there. To get them started in laying inside a box, put some dummy eggs inside(1 at a time) and they will lay their eggs there. Works best one hen at a time.

you should add some hay or something that will catch the eggs nicely
