Which chickens lay the most eggs and are docile? Which lay the most eggs and have attitude? Which are the most economical but produce the most all together. I am a newbie and am trying to figure out which ones I would like to start my egg laying flock. I got started by my daughter seeing silkies and wanting one. So I ordered some silkie bantam eggs and they have hatched. So now I would love to start a flock of egg layers to eat. If I can keep my wolfdogs from eating them lol. Jk they have their own enclosures. :-)

There are many chicken breeds out there who are all different in their own ways. Sounds like dual purpose breeds would fit your needs best. Buff orpingtons are my personal favorite. They lay lots of eggs. (200-300 a year) are very, very affectionate and docile. Black australorps are very similar to buff orpingtons but they tend to lay more. Barred rock and sussex chickens are very curious and love to investigate. They are generally friendly and are great layers. Wyandottes, sex links and rhode island reds are excellent layers but have a higher tendency to be aggressive. Silkies, cochins and brahmas are all known for their docile, affectionate personalties but they tend to be poor layers.

Here's some helpful links to check out as well.

Howdy! When I started, I listed what I wanted. ie: friendly, docile, good egg production, brown eggs, large eggs, colored eggs, heat/cold tolerant, docile w/ other birds, flighty or ok cooped, etc. I ordered Meyer Hatchery and Murray McMurray catalogs. They have descriptions of all their birds. Then I googled my short list for more info. It was fun and informative. If you check Meyer Hatchery or Murray McMurray online, you can view their catalogs and descriptions of birds. If you keep your climate and your housing arrangements in mind when selecting, you'll avoid future challenges. Good luck!

Thanks for replying. I am just learning how to find my posts lol. I am having fun hatching eggs. I like to just do a couple at a time. I got 4 silkies. However I am not sure they are what I need. My dad and I had Rhode Island Reds when I was growing up and I had them at my side all the time. Mind you I lived in down town Orlando and couldn't keep the roosters, but the hens were with me all the time. So now I have my own home in the sticks in Kentucky I want my own to have fresh eggs to feed my wolfers as well as my human family so all the info I get will be awesome. I read about the different breeds in this site but I don't know how accurate it is. I was told that any bantam chickens were mean. Of course now that I got bantam silkies lol
