egg laying

I put some nice nesting boxes in for my ducks; they lay everywhere but the boxes. I had heard that ducks usually wouldn't use them, but I was hoping they would, for the sake of keeping the eggs clean. Nope, they lay in the middle of the coop and everyone walks all over the eggs and gets them filthy. Even though I lay the straw in nice and deep and clean it out often.

That reminds me, I've been meaning to ask, what do you all use for egg cleaning, either mechanical or chemical methods? I got some egg wash powder from McMurray which works pretty well, in combination with a dish scrub brush. But it's got chlorine in it, which I'd like to get away from. Has anyone used one of the enzyme cleaners?

most ducks like a private place to lay and they usually like some ovehead cover. young ducks will drop them anywhere. another hint is to only put nesting material where you want to have eggs. an experienced duck will put a light layer of nesting material over her eggs so that they are out of sight when she leaves them.
