I was feeding my girls this morning and whilst eating away one of my girls had an egg membrane and egg white falling out. The others ate it pretty quickly.

does it mean she just needs more grit? or does she need something else?

I added more grit to the coop after seeing this, in case she was getting bullied out of it, so hopefully now there'll be enough

sounds like you have a hen thats laying shell less eggs

this is very common when a hen starts to lay or are still developing

i have 2 GLW's that are 1 year old and still lay them (all tho 1 is starting to form shells)

so what you need is more calcium basically

i would give them oyster shell (free choice and in they're food)

also if you can raw milk and yogurt are very good for them and provide extra calcium (i mix my chickens feed in with yogurt as a daily treat)

other wise give them about 18 months to mature after that if they still do it you will need to cull them

also pick up the shell less eggs when ever you can so the others dont eat it as this can start egg eating if a normal egg breaks open they can put 2 and 2 together.

I will get them some yogurt next time I'm in town, do you think they'd drink fresh cows milk?

I just found a yoke in the nesting box - I hope it's from the same girl and not another shell less girl!

I had some thin shelled eggs. My girls always have a free choice dish of oyster shells but some of their egg shells of late have been on the thin side. I started mixing some yogurt in their feed. There shells are much better now.

Another way to get calcium in is to use old egg shells. Rinse when you're cooking and then later after you have a tub full cook them in a 250* oven for a few minutes-they turn lightly brown or as some very smart person posted--microwave them for 1-2minutes. crush and serve. It's recycling at its finest.

probably is from the same one

and yes mine drink whole raw milk, my uncle gets me gallons of it from the local dairy, all i do is make it cold for them ( a bit of ice works) and they will drink a full gallon in 2 days
