My 8 year Old English Game Bantam hen has been acting sick and lethargic since Thursday afternoon.
In the past, she has laid soft shelled and thin eggs. She has had trouble laying eggs, but has always successfully laid them. To keep her from laying eggs, she has gotten hormone implants from the vet. The first implant lasted 7 months, and the second lasted 5 1/2 months. Every time it stopped working, she would lay an egg. It has been about 5 months since her last implant on April 1st.
Her poop on Thursday was watery with chunks of solid. Today, it was slightly yellow, but similar to my rooster's (also an 8 year old OEGB). I have linked pictures. She is still eating, but nowhere near her normal amounts (she'll take sunflower seeds and tomatoes). She can also fly from the ground to the coop. She's kept up with her usual habits, such as sunbathing, and still greets people who enter the coop.
We took her to the vet yesterday; the vet wasn't available, but a vet tech gave her another implant. They said she has lost some weight since the last visit.
We suspect she may be egg bound again (last time it was resolved with epsom salt baths and a calcium shot from the vet). From the poop today, we are scared it might be egg peritonitis.
We've been giving her epsom salt baths since Thursday. We've also been trying to give her high calcium foods (TUMS and yogurt). We've also given her some mineral oil.
The vet is closed on weekends, so we don't have access to that resource until Monday. She seems stable for now, but she's not getting better.
