I had a neighbor say that she would buy my birds/eggs because she knows they're cared for, loved, and respected. She said you can taste it in the eggs... that makes it all worth while.
You can't blame dairy farmers, or egg farmers, or any other farmers for the problems. Their profits haven't changed. If anything they have decreased. The fault lies with the powers that be, which have decided to use corn, and other grains, to make ethanol. Much of the country that grows these grains had one of the worst droughts in history last year. Between the price going up from the sell of OUR FOOD PRODUCTS to be used as fuel, along with the fact that there wasn't as much of said food product to meet demand it drove the price up. Now combine the increased cost of diesel, which runs most farm equipment and NOT ethanol, you have a soup that breeds an incredible mark up that noone is benefitting from, thereby increasing our depressing economical situation.
If our government would learn from other countries and take advantage of outside possibilities to make ethanol from beet pulp, sugar cane, or *gasp* hemp, farmers, as well as the average consumer, would be sitting alot easier. We wouldn't see these ridiculous grocery prices. Corn, and other grain, prices control what we pay for all meat and by products that we buy. Thats everything from steak to milk to jello.
We are headed to economic ruin if there isn't some changes made.
I mentioned earlier that there is a good post on the boards where Quad and PC made some awful good comments and suggestions on these subjects, maybe I could find them and quote from them. Quad has a nice website. Here is a link to his site for those interested in a more independent lifestyle http://www.backyardtechnology.com/technofarming/
We all need to realize that no one here is blaming the farmers. We all know that it is the greedful gain of the Gov't. If you want to sell eggs for 2.50 O.K. if you want to sell them for 1.75 O.k. I know that I am not going to be rolling in the dough with egg money. If I can just break even and be able to buy the feed and other products that I need to raise happy, healthy chickens and to supply my family with fresh eggs then I'm happy.
You have to look at the area that you live in and if things in area are slightly higher than in another area that someone alse lives, then you have to do what you think has to be done.
Let's all remember....no one is blaming the farmers. If you look at it this way, everyone here on BYC is a chicken farmer and I haven't heard of anyone being blamed for the rising cost of eggs, yet.
I am going to sell our eggs for $2.00 for outside customers and $1.75 for close friends. I will explain to them though if the price has to go up a bit.
The ones that will bring their own egg cartons to fill, I will give them maybe a 15 to 25 cent discount. This keeps me from having to find cartons myself for them.
the reason is this our gov wants all farmers to supply a cheap safe food supply.to the USA as well as the rest of the world.all the while our costs go up beyond the profits we make.an sooner or later this thing is gonna blow up on someone.i feel sorry for the peopple that dont know where food comes from.an what it really takes to produce the food.

First of all the Government does NOT set prices for commodities. GREEDY brokers, bankers, investors, whatever you want to call them do it. Big business today has become so @#&*@#% greedy they don't care about anyone or anything except MORE money. I work/worked for a company that, when I started was kind of a mom & pop shop. A big conglomerate saw a profitable business, made some promises they had NO INTENTION of keeping (you know, a hand shake and a wink) and then have made life absolutely miserable for the employees. It's all about MONEY! I'm not against a business making a profit. Heck, thats why people start a business. But to RAPE the emplyees and their customers just to put an extra nickel in their pockets......its EVIL!! The price of gas isn't high strictly because of government. The speculators are wholly responsible for the high prices. Who YOU VOTE FOR DETERMINES THE PRICE OF GAS. THE BIGGEST EXPENSE IN A GALLON OF GAS IS TAXES!! THAT IS WHY THERE IS SUCH A LARGE PRICE DIFFERENCE FROM STATE TO STATE. The oil companies have the same PROFIT MARGIN they've always had. Record profits does not reflect profit margin.

Partly right. There are three factors to high prices and poor conditions: Government intrusion and taxation, corporate mismanagement / greed, and irresponsible speculative investment. In all three cases it is a matter of people abusing the power they have over others, and failing to live up to their true responsibilities. However, their is a fourth factor, and it may be the most important of all: The failure of the oppressed to find their own solutions. IT IS UP TO US. Never before did five two-letter words mean so much. WE must choose to stop relying on powerful people for our destiny. we must-- raise our own food. Invest our resources wisely. promote truthful education. Exercise our freedoms. wean ourselves from our masters. Assume responsibility for ourselves. If we fail to outtrick the system, THEY will own us.

You misundertood what I said.
I said it is NOT the fault of government. It is the fault of GREEDY investors/speculators. The government could HELP but seems to choose not to to protect .....someone. We could have alternative energy vehicles on the road in 5 yrs or less if we really wanted to. Hybrids are a joke btw.
Fuel cell, methanol (from beet or cane sugar, NOT corn) , or plug-in electric. Government mandate. By Jan 1 20?? no more gasoline powered vehicles. That simple.
Well I have to say gas is rediculous here in Maine like $3.40+ a gallon. Milk I pay about $5.50 a gallon. I do not mind paying that much for my milk since it is organic and the farmer sells direct. The milk comes in the old fashioned glass half gallon containers. What I like is that the farmer in this case is actually making a good profit from what I can see. They do not add any growth hormones or actually anything at all, it is all natural. I am thinking about getting some dairy goats and even more so after reading this thread. One other thing on rising prices is heating oil. This is getting way out of control, I paid like $375.00 for 100 gallons. I am planning on purchasing a pellet stove this summer to get away from oil.
