I'm new to BYC, but not new to poultry production, my degree is in Poultry Science as was my career, along with some fish work. I recently got involved with a mission group in Belize, they are interested in helping residents of the Corazol region produce back yard eggs and I'm hoping I can help. I know chickens usually need 14 hours of light to produce eggs on any kind of regular basis, and the charts indicate there is not that much daylight in Belize, too close to the equator I guess. I saw baby back yard chicks while there so there is some breeding and production, I don't know if the daylength is optimal for egg production however. I have searched the web for specifics but haven't had much luck. Any ideas?

Hi, I think chickens are pretty much everywhere so you shouldn't have trouble. Maybe there are some local breeds that are especially suited to the climate, daylight, etc.

I just did a quick search for chickens in Belize and some links popped up. There's a Belize Poultry Association that is a commercial operation and there was a FaceBook post by someone that raises chickens, quail and turkeys. There was an article about "Peel-Neck" chickens (dual purpose birds for both eggs & meat) that apparently do well in Belize. So you might want to do some digging and contact others in Belize to see what advice they can give you.

Good luck and keep us posted on how it goes!
