Egg question

I've got someone in our hatched hens who is laying a strange egg more often than not. I can't catch them laying so don't know which bird is doing it. Most days I get an egg that looks normal, covered with a heavy layer of dark chalky whitish powder. Not speckled white like you see in stressed birds. I've had a couple that were not decent shells, then this odd one. It's got that heavy powder finish but it's got a green tinge to it. Should I be worried about what's going on?

Last two days I've had all perfect eggs from them, just as I was starting to wonder if something is wrong. Still wanted to see what you all thought of this.

Interessting. I never had such an easter egg, but I had once an egg which was totally dark green, like the bottom of yours.

Dunno what is causing that. Fact is, that it is an irrugilarity in the layer system.

I have 2 hens, which are permanently laying eggs, which are missing the last spotted shell layer ... no calcium or vitamines are changing it.
Also a defect in the layer system, I guess.

My big Roux hen laid many of these over the summer. She’d lay a chalky egg in the morning and then later another, fragile egg at night. I used both like normal eggs. Eventually she stopped laying for a week, and started up again with normal eggs. Unfortunately she won’t be around to see if she’ll lay these again as she just got eaten by a raccoon

That looks like heavy bloom. It's not unusual.

You can eat or hatch and treat like normal? I'm not familiar with what bloom is. Going to see what Google can teach me!

Bloom is the very outer layer of the egg, kind of the “paint” on top Of the shell. Most quail eggs I’ve seen it’s kind of shiny, plus it includes the camouflage speckles and splashes.

Edit: you can eat or hatch them still.

Just read about bloom. I didn't realize it could become so thick! I've been tossing the ones that look like that. Glad I asked - I'll keep them now.
