Maybe others have had different experiences, but the times I left the cracked egg under the hen the chick or duckling has died. I recently hatched a duck egg in a homemade hatcher using a plastic bin, heating pad, and towels:
Homemade Hatcher Experiment

@Pyxis, @WVduckchick, what would you guys do?
I really appreciate your advice. No sooner that I set up this homemade heat house, that the chick is waaay more active and now chirping! Thank you!!

Do you have one of those Braun ear thermometers? If so, monitor the shell temp and try to keep it close to 100 f.
I don’t, I have it set up in a room upstairs, as we don’t have A/C up there. It’s warm in there, real warm. I believe we were a steady 100° all day. Now with the heat pad and wet rag there is condensation on the walls of the Tupperware. I’m more concerned about overheating?

Overheating is a concern, and I lost one of the eggs in my experiment from it. Did you read the assisted hatching article?

I would have gone to pick up an incubator if I originally thought it would come to this. Unfortunately stores are now closed near me. Would you think a heating pad, wet rag and Tupperware would work?
go ahead and try it, but make sure the tupperware is ventilated (poke holes in it) and that the heating pad isn't too hot. keep a close eye on the chick in case it needs to be assisted

I’m following this post and learning from it too!! We used an incubator to try to hatch out 14 eggs that we ordered and only three hatched, and one of them died due to a birth defect. If I hatch eggs in the future I will definitely let mama hen hatch them out!!
