Egg stopped peeping and no pipping...dead?

I believe a hen will peck an egg when she hears a signal from the baby that it can't get out. Anyone know?

A few years ago I had a hen that would actually do that. She would roll the egg around a few times, then you would see that she was getting upset and she would start pecking at the egg. Soon enough we would here the peeps again and mom would help it.

Well, I finally gave up on the eggs...one never did cheep, so hopefully it died long ago. Feeling sad about the one that was alive so recently, but meanwhile the other chicks need to get out, and our broody quarters are pretty restricted. We also added some meat chicks under the mama for her to raise, and they DEFinitely had to eat, so we ended up calling it quits. Trying to get up the guts to do an eggtopsy, but oy...
