Egg Swiping at Shows

We just show at the county level right now, but we are going to start showing at some bigger shows. We have had an egg or two layed in the show cage, but no one ever took them. If you are not associated with the show, I don't want anyone's hand in my cage. So taking the egg was wrong. But you expressed regret over doing it, so learn from it. We all make mistakes, but it takes a big person to admit they made one and are sorry about it.

Has anybody ever had somebody try to put a hen in with one of your roosters before? I typically do not worry about my hens eggs because often times she will be isolated from roosters and the eggs will be infertile. I've never had it happen to my stock to my knowledge but I always wonder if it happens. It would kinda be the same concept though - taking genetics from somebody.

Ah well, I rarely show my birds anyway and when I do I am pretty much at the show the entire day watching over my little chickies.

No you cannot because the judge has to be able to go into the cage to get the bird out for judging.

I was about to ask that myself. I'm glad this topic got started - I'd never even thought of any of this before. I guess I was thinking of it somewhat like dog shows (not that I have any experience with those, either) and didn't consider the fact that eggs could be stolen. Guess chicken genes are a lot easier to steal than dog or cat genes.

Hi! Do you know when/why the rule "eggs laid at the show belong to the show" got started?
I think it's odd, but interesting. I'm sure there must be a history.
I can't imagine a show steward (what're they called?) telling an exhibitor, "Sir, you may not take that egg your hen just laid. It's our egg because it was laid here."

If that is what they say, I am sure they will do so; I have never seen it stated in a rule book or heard it before this thread that the eggs collected would be destroyed.

It is also not worthwhile as one can simply lift the cage and slide the bird out from underneath. Show cages have no bottoms,

Yes you can but the locks MUST be removed before judging and then you can put them back on if they dont take BB or RB, then once they have picked a class champion they can go back on"unless you are the one with the class champ. or reserve class champ!" I keep locks on mine and I also keep other people from touching my birds with out my permition too! When you get stragglers that go around and handle sale birds then touch peoples show birds you are bound to catch something!!! Locks help prevent this too!

Ive never heard of anyone taking a bird with a lock on it! Ive heard of several being stolen without a lock on it! It looks pretty suspicious when someone is lifting a cage up to get a bird!!! Plus these small compact shows where most of this occurs they are double/triple stacked and alot harder to lift the cages up!

Always keep an eye on your birds at all times! even with locks!!!

Alot of times when a bird gets stolen the owner has several breeds of birds in different classes and cant keep an eye on all of there birds! another thing is during coop out if you have locks on your cages until you get it out to load up then your not risking someone picking your bird up by accendent"Ive seen this happen tooo many times!" Theres more to locks and zip ties then just stealing on purpose, accendents always happens!!!

Ive also had people steal feed and water cups right out of my unlocked cages!
