Attention mixed breed keepers:
A friend of ours wants to keep RIRs and other bantams and asked for one of my Brahma cockerels because he knows i have extra at the moment. I'm happy to give him one but was curious if there would be a problem because of his size.

I see potential injuries from him "crushing" the much smaller hens during mating. They weigh about 8-9lbs but are expected to exceed 10lbs like their father.

But I was curious about the egg size. Do the hens govern egg size completely and the males just fertilize or do male genes play a roll in egg size as well? Larger breeds need larger eggs? Can there be a higher risk of the smaller hens becoming egg bound?
I have only kept large breeds so never gave the matter much thought until now. I'd love to lose an extra cockerel but want to be responsible and not cause problems for my friend or his hens.
Thanks!

I don't think it's the same as with mammals, where a large sire over a mini mama may produce offspring too big to deliver.

My light brahmas laid fairly small eggs in comparison to their physical size(and how much they ate!)

A large Brahma cock/erel could crush a bantam hen while mating, but if successful I don't think the egg the off spring laid would be too big'.

RIRs and other bantams
RIR and bantams......or are the RIR bantams as well?
