Egg Turning

Hello Newbie here trying to learn ,
I do not have a Egg Turner , I have a Fan & Light Set-Up (Homemade Incubator).
Can someone explain how to turn the eggs please , I am new to hatchin & I am not sure , from what I understand is that
you mark X on one side O on the other & turn 3x a Day rotating from X position to O position ???
Do you have to spin / turn the eggs a few times before setting it ?

^ Thats what I do when I hand turn. I also put my eggs waiting to go into the incubator in an egg carton and stick a book under one end of the other 3x a day as well. If my auto turner isn't in use, I stick them in there so I don't have to mess with them
