We don’t know what to do... at least one chick was fully hatched and we heard several other cheeping, when all of a sudden “boom”. Mama got up and sat back down, and then the smell was actually not that bad. Anyway we tried to move the mama and see what was going on... to no avail... what do we need to do... everything seems fine. Should we just leave it... this is our first hatch and we do not know anything...

I can already smell the egg :sick

Definitely don't leave it. That egg was full of bacteria and is bad for the chicks.

I had that happen once before any chicks hatched. The smell was pretty awful and the lazy broody ate some of it and became sick with diarrhea. It was a mess. She had to have a round of an antibiotic, and I cleaned the eggs up as best I could. Bacteria does enter the egg through the porous shell and it could sicken or kill the embryos.

Any eggs soiled by the mess, should be gently cleaned with warm soap and water, careful not to jar them or knock them around that might dislodge the embryo's attachment to the egg.

It's very unfortunate when this happens. What's amazing is that it doesn't happen more often.

Egg prob had a hairline crack and the warmth and humidity grew bacteria in egg and swelled and popped.
Defiantly get it out some how.
