Yesterday one of my hens (I know which egg is hers) laid an egg with blood on the shell. Today, the same hen laid another egg with blood on the shell. Any ideas for what may be causing this? She seems to be healthy otherwise, eating, drinking, etc. She has been laying for about 5-6 months, she's going to be a year old end of March. She is a mix of red sex link I believe, but not sure. I attached a photo of her egg from today below. Also, checked her vent, there wasn't an injury, at least not visible on the outside anyway.

No, her egg size has been about the same. That is why I am worried I suppose. One day, okay, but twice in a row? That makes me worry a little more. Or perhaps I am just overthinking it. Maybe it is just a vessel. And twice in a row because it hasn't healed completely yet.

I had the same thought: two days in a row seems unusual. But, your thought that it may be because it hasn't healed yet makes sense. That may be why other posters have said not to worry unless it keeps up for a week.

I hope she's okay. I empathize with your worry. I'll keep my fingers crossed that she lays a clean egg tomorrow.
Thank you, I appreciate it. Yes, I hope she does. I will update either way.

Alright, thank you, I appreciate you sharing your own experience with it. I read through the thread. And yes, seems that for you she did not have another bloody egg after those few days. Hopefully it will be the same for Cleo.

I got one or two bloody eggs a week or so ago as she's started up laying again.

I'm not planning on breeding her since she's a poor layer who has odd eggs (often misshapen and/or with extra calcium deposits.

One of my girls laid bloody eggs for a week or so, then every so often for her first year. It worried me, but she is fine and so far, no bloody ones this year.:fl
Thank you. Yes, I am hoping that this is just a short phase, and nothing that may be concerning. My brain tends to jump to worst-case scenarios, so after consulting with all of you, I am now more certain that she's probably fine. Time will tell.
