Hello all, We have a young flock (hatched last June) of 24 mixed breeds (Cochins, arucanas and orpingtons) and they have been performing wonderfully until last week. I went to gather eggs and there was a dead hen siting in a nest. Did not appear to be anything wrong with her . It had been raining for two weeks and we were having a mud problem in their yard. Tonight I went to gather eggs and found a egg with no shell, just the membrane, you can pick it up and it is like jello. We had had some thin shells so started giving them oyster shell a couple of months ago. What causeses this and do we have a problem ??? framer

I would say the trama from the rain and mud
the hen just laid a egg too fast

but IF YOU PUTapple cider vinegar in the water
2 tbsp ACV to gallon of water
it helps the hens to absorb the calcium and Vit D into their systems
also may I suggest throwing out the first part of the oyster shell in a pile in the beding as they do pick thru it and don't eat as much as if it is renewed

she will need some extra calcium
you can take human calcium and crush it and mix with dry chicken crumbles and some milk and make a wet mash probiotic
some yoguart also and then feed it
give each hen 1000 mg of calcium and multiply by the amt of hens eating it
each hen needs 3 tbsp of the dry crumbles

so fix them up some wet mash and calcium

any questions email me

Whats AVC? & how much apple cider vinegar?

May I add this
also may I suggest throwing out the first part of the oyster shell in a pile in the out door soil in pen
or just throw it out now and when the mud is gone they will scratch in it and eat what they want.
As they do pick thru it and don't eat as much as if it is renewed.
Renewing the oyster shell and grit is very neccessary as chickens want something new to pick at.

She will need some extra calcium (SO WILL ALL THE HENS)
You can take human calcium and crush it and mix( mix well so all hens get some calcium) with dry chicken crumbles and some milk and Yougart non flavoed, make a wet mash probiotic
Use some unflavored yougart say 1/3 cup and then
add some applesauce on top of feeder of wet mash say 1/2 cup spread over wet mash so they will eat the wet mash probiotic feed it.

Give each hen 1000 mg of calcium and multiply by the amt of hens eating it'(MAKE ENOUGH WET MASH FOR ALL AMOUNT OF HENS EATING THE WET MASH PROBIOTIC)
Each hen needs 3 tbsp of the dry crumbles in the WET MASH PROBIOTIC
Use just enough milk any kind, to make the wet mash wet NOT SLOPPY(CHICKENS DO NOT LIKE SLOOPY WET MASH ON THEIR BEAKS)

So fix them up some wet mash and calcium
