egg with no shell

I had the same thing happen a few weeks ago. It was one of my younger girls who just started laying. It rolled out of her as she was walking down the ramp into the run. I happened to be standing in there at the time and saw her close her eyes, squat and out it popped like a rubber ball. I picked up some oyster shells for them and it hasn't happened again. I hear that it is very common though.

I have six rhode island red pullets that are just starting to lay. Interestingly enough, one of the girls is laying a no shell egg in the same spot every other day (for over two weeks now). The rest of the girls are laying small but hard shelled eggs. One of the girls is also laying double yolk eggs on a regular basis. They have had oyster shell available for over two months.

Remember that store bought eggs have already been sorted, and the funny looking eggs removed. You will see odd things at times. Hopefully, only at times.

I had one laying soft shelled eggs last week for about 4 or 5 days in a row, then she stopped, and now all is back to normal. That's usually how it goes -- something odd happens, then it stops.

Aren't those weird? I found a fresh soft shell that was very much like a turtle egg...it was surprising. Also, I've found a normal egg with a quarter size spot that was soft. When I grabbed it from the nest box my nail went right through. Gross. All of these were from new layers.

Thanks,I never had this happen before and thought it was odd.I have barred rocks 9 hens and 1 roo. They have been laying for about 4 weeks now and I'm getting around 6 to 7 eggs a day. Thanks for the info.
