A broken egg makes everything sticky in the nest, like glue. Hens roll eggs under them. I have seen the same type of situations posted in practical poultry magazines. It happens.

Agrees with OHLD, have seen it before too.
If you peel off the white shell, you'll find eggs are not exactly the same shape and size.

I've also seen a partial egg shell get stuck on an other egg in the incubator. That's one reason to occasionally intervene when the bator is super full to remove some of the older chicks, and snag those egg shells out of there.
