Does anyone have any advice about preventing a chicken from getting eggbound....Or about how to help them when it happens? Just lost one and want to see if there is anything that I can do...First time with chickens so I havent experienced this before!

Great! Thank you...What is the best thing to do if I notice the same symptoms again??

I think you are suposed to give them a warm bath for 30 minutes and then keep them in a nice warm place until they dry. We thought we had an eggbound hen and so we did all that but it turned out she was broody! (all that work for nothin')

I hope this helps and keep looking for more information 'cause we are new to chickens too.

I'm dealing with a hen right now with soft shells and egg bound, but she is pulling through.

If she cant pass the egg you put her in an elevated cage with a wire bottom. Make sure she as water, put a humidifier under her and a blanket over the cage making a little steam room. This will help her pass the egg.

My hens dont get much veggies in the winter so I pick up some extra veggies like brocolli and dandilions. I also mix yogurt, crumbles, ground oysters and grit and give about 1/2 a cup to her. After a few days of this she starts laying again. The eggs are thin at first but they get thicker.

I also found my home water has arsenic in it so the hens are getting fillered water for now until I have a home filter system installed.

sometimes it also helps to rub a little olive oil on, in and around her vent- it acts as a lubricant and helps the egg slip out! if all else fails, stick something in and attemps to break the egg that's binding her. be VERY careful if you do that, though, because you could just end up hurting the hen!
