One of my pullets became egg bound a day ago and has been only pooping egg yolkes mixed with a little bit of poo. She is very lethargic. I already separated her and given her a warm bath, a heat lamp, massaged the belly and palptated the vent area. All I could find in there was more egg yolk. I can hear her intestines working a lot just like with a horse that has a colic. Lots of gurgling in there. She has been laying for a little over 2 months and her eggs always have a beautiful shell to them and she has free feed oyster shell supplement. I now have water with eletcrolytes for her and I fed her some oil. She is not interested in eating or drinking at this point. My question is whether or not there is anything else I can do but wait? Is there a chance that there would be a random egg without a shell after she laid so many good eggs? Will her next egg push all of this "stuff" out? Or am I not getting in deep enough to feel a broken shell? When massaging her belly I also could not detect an egg but she is defintely pushing and working something out. What else could I do? Thank you everybody!

I also have a hen that I think is egg bound. Last night I put her in the sink with warm water and massaged her belly for an hour to try and work it out, but no luck. I even used a syringe without a needle and injected some olive oil into her vent to try and lubricate it enough to make it easier for the egg (or eggs) to pass, but it didn't seem to help either. I put her in a crate so I could watch her. Today, she is the same, no egg. I am sure she is going to die. I don't know what else to do. I can feel what I think is an egg, but it is not close to the end of her oviduct. I tried to work it out, but it just would not come out. I have to work 12 hour shifts today and this weekend, so I cant take her to the vet. I don't even know if they would treat a chicken. Anyway, it sounds like the egg broke in your hen, which is not good, as it can cause infection. Especially if the broken egg shell is still inside her. Have you tried feeling for the broken pieces? I am sorry I have no helpful information for you, but here is a hug for you, me, and both our hens.

Thank you so much old chicken lady. I felt as far as I could internally and there was nothing. I couldn't feel anything externally either. This morning she started pooping out the oil I fed her last night so she should be well lubricated. She is also pooping fine but in a lot of pain and having lots of contractions. Gave her another bath this morning since I could actually feel a mass moving its way towards her vent. I am thinking about giving her some tuna to get her some protein. Has anybody ever thought of giving pain meds? I would think that if she wouldn't be in so much pain she'd have more energy to push? So far she has not pooped out any eggshell at all. I cannot feel anything either. I will keep a close eye on her and end her suffering if needed.
