Hello I'm guilherme from brazil

I'm glad I found a discussion board about chickens in general because I'm worried about what's happening. As you guys may guess english isn't my native language. I'll try my best to clearly express myself.

We have a variety of chickens called "galize". For practical purposes, they are similar to regular chickens, except they are half-grown - smaller in size. There's a chicken in particular:

- she's probably 4~5 years old
- they (all) haven't been laying for more than 6 months
- It's been two month that her fluff region is swell and bulky
- As soon as I noticed the problem, probably a week later, I isolated her and treated her with terramycin for 4 day which turned out to be useless
- In her isolation I checked her poop and I didn't look different
- Her bulky region is indeed much warmer than normal and feels slightly rigid ( like a relaxed human biceps)
- Despite all, she feeds, walks, takes sandbath regularly and she doesn't present any sign of pain

I'm not really sure if this is a eggbound problem, perhaps you may help us

I was thinking the same thing.

Usually when they are egg bound they will walk around like a penguin, and strain.....you can wear a glove, well lubricate a finger and check inside her to see if you can feel an egg. If she is indeed egg bound, soaking in warm water or sitting with them on a heating pad on low has worked for me...as well as giving them a 1/3 piece of tums or rolaids...there's lots of information on this forum about treating egg bound hens. I doubt that's it though.

Unfortunatly, there's not alot to be done for internal layers....sometimes you can drain out the accumulation of fluid in the abdominal cavity and give them a shot of penicillin G for the infection, but it's just a process of prolonging the inevitable. It's very sad.

If it were me, I would lube up and check inside of her.....If i felt an egg, i would give her 1/4 of a tums (or whatever calcium tablets you guys have available down there) and try some warm water baths.....If I felt nothing then i would do a gentle flush with cool water just to see if any egg yolk etc came out. Then I would consider a round of Penn G shots for possible egg yolk perotinitis....

here's some good links:
