i have a RIR hen, shes been laying for a month or so now, and very consistant with a day off here and there. yesterday she stayed in coop laying in the shavings when the other went out, i thought it was a bit odd but she seemed fine. today i let them out and she stayed in, she stayed still when i went near her, and she just doesnt seem right. her wings are kind of drooping too, i cant remember for the life of me whether i got an egg from her yesterday or not. could she be egg bound, and if so what do i do for her? how do i know? can this happen randomly and this fast?

She could be broody. Mine acted the same way (and about a month after she started laying also). Does she look all flat and round and does she have this glaring stare? Does she make growling or weird noises when you try to pick her up?

even tho shes a RIR? i thought they never go broody so i never suspected, plus im a newbie so i wouldnt even recognize the signs. yes she is flat and round and she is staring and moving slowly, i thought she was in pain. she came out of nest box and no egg, and my roo is picking on her big time and he never does. she let the dogs come up and sniff her behind without moving, but when they came near her from the front she'd put her wings out and peck at them. shes just hanging in one spot outside the coop now. i havent tried to pick her up, and i havent noticed any noises. what else should i look for? her tail feathers seem lower than usual, they are usually upright. what should i do for her?

I'm pretty new too so I'm not sure why she's not in a nest. Mine was in the nestbox, but then she knew to lay in there by the time she went broody. (for the first 2 weeks, she kept laying in the middle of the coop)

My guess would be to put her in the nest box so that maybe the roo would stop picking on her. If you see him do it, shoo him away. See if she makes a growling noise when you pick her up. Mine does.

I don't know what the symptoms of egg bound are, but if you do a search (upper right hand corner) you should find lots of info there.

ok i just coaxed her back into coop, shes just standing there, she had some running stuff coming from her behind, i guess it almost looked like egg coming out? just a tiny bit. i dont know whats going on. ill search and see what i find for info

Hang in there someone can give you advise, sorry I can't help here is a bump

I don't know what the signs are for an eggbound hen are, but I know what to do for one. Give her a bath in warm water (not hot, 'cause that will hurt her) and keep her behind immersed in water for 30 min. Put her back in the coop and she should have an egg pop right out in a day or so.
If she is broody, put her in a box/cage with a mesh bottom and be sure to give her feed and water. Having air around the hen will make her stop thinking about being broody. If she has been broody for a while, it might take her a while to start laying again. Read more about it.
Tell us what happens!

i might try the bath today. lastnight she didnt roost with the others, she layed near the roost but huddled down on the ground. today she was standing over by the feeder with them all but had her head tucked under her wing and just kept blinking when she looked up at me. what is going on? i wish some more people would chime in here and give me some advice
