(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I grew up in a family that raised chickens, and then ended up in cities for college/initial employment. I bought a few acres in NE Texas about 4 years ago, and immediately set up my coop with laying hens.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Just under 20 as of today.
(3) What breeds do you have?
We have a barnyard mix that has been created over time, including some people adding their flock to ours once the flock is too old to produce. It consists of Easter Eggers, Ameracauna, Black Copper Maran, Leghorn and Wyandotte.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Truthfully, our chickens are pets first, and that is the primary function they serve. They certainly pull their weight better than the house cats because they at least produce eggs, but we keep them even once they are too old to lay consistently (or at all).
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Most of our hobbies and activities center around our child. He is nearing a teenager, and heavily involved in school, church & community activities. We had hobbies many years ago, but now I either work or chase around a child (and secretly enjoy it).
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
We are a family of (3) situated in a small rural area alongside much of the family. We routinely have my parents, in-laws or siblings/cousins over at our property. Sometimes they are here to visit, but they are more often here to work on whatever project they are pursuing on the land. We love every minute of it, even if we may be surprised to see someone when we turn a corner of the land.
I work in electrical engineering, and decided to join as a means to interact and ask more questions. In my day job I interact with other countries (especially low-cost countries) on aspects such as electrical design, and I would like to try to combine my professional knowledge with my hobbies. I think I can design specific features within items such as incubators, with cost effective methods, to debut new, improved designs. However, I know first-hand that engineers lack the customer story, so I hope to ask questions first.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I first found the community about 4 or so years ago when I was setting up at my new place. I checked here for an updated list of do's-and-dont's and what kind of new equipment/features had released. I finally joined so that I can more easily ask questions as I seek to develop products with key features either missing today or spread across multiple different purchases.
