Hi,

I raised some chicks last summer and am waiting for them to start laying. I did not use any artificial light over the winter. I have read that they should start laying in February or March when in natural light conditions. None of my 3 hens has laid her first egg yet. I started them on layer feed last month in anticipation. When do chickens normally start laying in Michigan when not given artificial light?

Thanks!

It depends on day length, age and breed.
How many weeks are they and what breeds?
If it were me, I would switch back to grower feed till you get eggs.
4% calcium is too high for non layers.
If their combs/wattles are growing and bright red, laying is coming soon.

I would say the hens are between 6 - 8 months. One is a polish and the other two are bantam mixes...I think they are faverolle and ? I did notice the other day that their combs and wattles are more red. That is good news. Hopefully soon. And thanks for the advice about the feed.
