eggs and a question regarding crosses

I always remember growing up that everyone had barnyard mixes for their henhouse!!...just plain ol mutts, good egg layers and they were the best eating for Sunday dinners with the preacher!...lol ..always made good chicken and dumplings!

Yep..We need to take a poll on and start a chickens anonymous group!.... lol

I like pure breeds, they have certain given traits that are predictible......
But man-oh-man do I LOVE my Mutts! Most of our 'breeding stock' is what most people call mutts, but I prefer happy, healthy and beautiful surprises over predictible or standardized.

I love purebreds and have already planned on getting several different breeds and keeping them separate so I can get purebred eggs from them. However....Im also planning on crossing other breeds together just for fun. Im really interesting in seeing what I get crossing 2 different breeds. Its all fun stuff.

Well if any of the eggs become chicks, I'll post pics. We are hatching out cuckoo marans that are PB from another friend but the one's that are intriguing are the mixes b/c it's like "surprise"

A lot of "Pure breed" strains are actually crosses.
RIR's, New Hampshires, Buckeys & Plymouth barred rocks just to name a few.

Over the years breeds have been crossed who's prodgeny breeds true through generations and they're become their own breed.
