Eggs are just not selling anymore **Update page 4**

Great ideas. There are a lot of unemployed and under employed folks around here too. Most of them raise animals of their own, very few have computers and internet. I post on Freecycle and Craigslist, and NEVER get responses to anything, not ever, since I moved to this area. Between the cost of internet, and the fact that very few people have high speed-- the ones with the computers to little more than check email occasionally from a dial up account.

The whole area I live in is relatively low population, as well. 2 years ago I was the only person on this stretch of road ( about 40 miles) selling eggs. There are now 6 new signs up on the road, plus mine. Like my neighbor said-- a flooded market. I put up new signs yesterday, with a lower price, hoping to attract back some old customers, and maybe get a few tourists and campers this weekend- that'd be nice! We'll see!!

My eggs aren't from purebred chickens-- can you sell hatching eggs that are just barnyard mix?

I think you could sell barnyard mix eggs I have seen a few ads for those, I think people just wanting a small backyard flock would jump on those eggs I would buy some if I had an incubator but I don't good luck I have the opposite problem not enough eggs to be able to sell some our family uses everything my girls lay. I bet some of those people give up on the chicken thing when they find out their is no money in it, or its costing them more then they are making hang in there things will get better.

Well, we never "made" money selling eggs. It just kept things reasonable, while giving others the chance to eat fresh eggs. Now, we have no help with the feed costs, plus we're wasting a lot of eggs. I have posted some ads on Craigslist offering some of my hens for sale--no takers yet.
We are having a chicken swap in August again. I think I'll have to sit down with hubby and we'll have to make a decision-- to decide to act by the swap date-- if we don't start selling xx amount of eggs by then,,,,, then we'll have to sell xx amount of hens.
I, too, am guessing that some of the folks that are newly selling eggs will stop. But, from what I see ( not counting those who sell without signs on the road), egg sellers have gone up 600 percent in 3 months. This area's population is less than 1000 in probably 20 square miles. That's a LOT Of eggs, for not a lot of people.... Most of those folks would have to stop selling to see any sales again.

I'm doing what I can- and can only hope it gets better. What will be, will be though-- maybe I'm only meant to have a very small flock

I know people who sell the blue or green eggs and those really dark brown eggs. they cant produce enough to keep up with the demand. Many people have never seen anything but white or lighter brown eggs. If you have something unique you have a better chance of selling out.

I think if the competition is that bad, just keep a few hens for your family's egg needs & sell the others.

At least yours are laying...my Show Silkies think they will die a slow painful death if they lay even one egg!

I cant hardly even get the eggs in the house without somebody wanting to buy them. Today I brought in 31 eggs. I average 28 every day now. I have one lady who buys them from me and then resells them at a flea market (why do they call them flea markets?) for $2.50 a dozen. I've raised my price to $1.50 a dozen and they still sell like crazy.

Not selling here either. So I decided to sell some hens. They are being advertised on CL for $10-$15. SO, I thought I would sell mine quick by advertising mine for $5 each... No takers. The one guy that did call me asked if I'd take less than $5.00 for a laying hen.. Uhhh, no!! I ended up trading 8 hens and a roo for a free dinner at my local Bar-b-que Restaurant. Sure, the most expensive meal my DH and I could eat would cost maybe $25, but I would rather trade for dinner than sell out for next to nothing. I think that is a deal. I don't have to buy as much chicken feed, or toss so many eggs. And I get a happy belly for an evening!!!!!!!! But I did tell the owner I didn't want chicken for dinner...

I know exactly how you feel. I get a couple dozen a day. And can't give them away around here.

I have over 10 dozen in my fridge. I really don't know what to do with them. I fed 2 dozen + to the birds already today.

I think it's time to cut back on some hens.

But yet I went to a huge swap the other day. Sold the roosters for 4-5 dollars. But I couldn't sell the pullets for $4? What the heck. I didn't sell a single chick or hen.

The market is really wacko right now.
