Hi, I'm new. Should I clean the eggs that got covered by the poo of the broody, while the broody is out of her cage?

Please advice. Should I or I shouldn't?

If yes, then, how? With a wet cloth?

Thanks.

Affectionately,
Saleem.

Welcome!

I agree; you can clean them with a wet cloth but gently as you do not want to remove the bloom which naturally protects the egg.

It is interesting that she is pooping on them. Usually a broody hen will save it up and on one of her breaks from sitting, drop a huge, smelly broody poop.

I hope you enjoy BYC. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun. Unlike non chicken loving friends, family and colleagues, BYC’ers never tire of stories or pictures that feature our feathered and non feathered friends

icky poo. Are you making her leave the nest at least a couple times a day so she can eat, drink and poop? Some refuse to leave unless you put them out.

No. I didn't allowed them to leave for three days, as I wanted them to accept their new hatching cage.

I bought them from the market two months ago. I believe they are from a free range farm, because, I noticed that they were fearful of me and my family.

Its the peak of the winter, here in Saudi Arabia. So, hardly they were sitting on their eggs for an or two max. After that, they use to enter our house and make loud sounds. I left them on their own for a few days, to see, if they choose a place/corner, of their choice. But, they didn't.

Then I approached them, to hold them and to move them along with their eggs, to another bedroom, they never accepted it. They used to run away. Still, they were making sounds, signaling their broodiness.

Hence I bought two cages that were means for birds or parrots. I did put a corrugated box beneath, used a tray, added some chips of wood, that I got from a local carpenter.

They were not comfortable with it, I noticed that for two to three days.

Then I replaced the wood chips with grass. They accepted it.

In the three days, they had spoiled all the eggs and the entire room was smelling very bad. I was hardly getting time to given them food and water.

Yesterday was the weekend over here, hence let them go out in the boundry of my house.

I then cleaned all the eggs with warms water and sponge. It took more than an hour to clean everything: Eggs, Cage and its base, got fresh grass from the neighborhood, cleaned the bedroom, etc.

Later, I had to get them forcefully into my house and left them calmly in the cage. For about 30 mins, they were just standing still, next to the egg basket, not going into the eggs to hatch them. I think, they were surprised, with changes.

I got worried. But, an hour later I peeped in the bedroom, to see that, Ahhh... they both were hatching!

Thanks! Shall update as time permits.
