Eggs for food vs eggs for chicks...sound off please

Pics
That's a lot of growth! Very cool! And thank you for input! Doesn't matter how many already posted, I love all the points of view and ideas to ponder! So basically you use the same chickens for both uses and just incubate when you want more? That seems to kind of be the trend for anyone not exclusively using their gals for eggs to eat.

So mine should work out well now then that I have all together...7 gals and one fine roo. (Who is still doing a very nice gentlemanly job of overseeing his ladies).

On another note, do you concentrate on any specific breed/s?
I do, but I raise birds to show at poultry shows. if you read my signature line I have listed the breeds I have and show. In the past I have had others but these are the ones I breed to show. I would rather be a breeder than procreate but everyone is different with different goals. Good luck and have fun...

He has 12 girls and I have 8 new ones, but one with them is a roo...:( so he tries to fight with that one through the cage! He wants all the girls....The new roo is pretty, I need someone to take him.
Sucky. I wish I had room to have a coop for each roo I end up with to have their own flock. I would have acres of coops lmbo! Maybe I should do just that and start a RescRoo!

It has taken many years but over the years we have added coops but we have several acres. I do keep one male usually in each coop with the females. When the young males start to annoy the young females, like several males trying to mount one female, I separate them and put the males into separate coops and pens bachelor coops and sell most of them. I usually keep the best male from each breed as a future breeder. Selling the extra males helps with the feed costs and I have people who will buy them.

I don't concentrate on specific breeds because it's too hard with all of our breeds and free ranging. But I do concentrate on specific traits. My idea is that next year I want to be hatching out fluffy face fluffy footed chicks(like d'uccles), and I want to hatch as many chicks from Napoleon(profile pic) because he's our extremely well mannered head rooster(even if he is on the verge of being bantam especially compared to my giant wimp of a BLR Wyandotte)... And I would always like to hatch out more BLRs but I've only got one roo and two hens so the chances are slim.
Chicks who don't fit the traits I'm looking for are the first to be sold.

I started many of my flocks with a male and 2 or 3 females. As the chicks grow out keep the best as your future breeders. Breed father to daughters and son to mother and your other females. Keep the best from these as your future breeders. Good luck and have fun...

I miss these heritage Rhode island reds believe it or not I'm in Connecticut and can't find them anywhere.... And Rhode island is right next door, everything has been diluted with these production Rhode island red which are so far from the ones I remember as a kid...

I got my start with the birds I have now from the fellow who is the president of the Rhode Island Red Club of America several years ago. I have kept them pure. I met the fellow at a poultry show and made arrangements to get some birds at another show.
