Eggs & Grass

Depends on what breed of chickens you have as to how many eggs they will lay on average.
They can eat grass but you probably should feed them a complete poultry feed instead.

If they eat anything beside a complete poultry feed you should offer grit, in a dish on the side, never mixed into anything.

Yes, they need chicken feed primarily, but grass in addition makes the most delicious eggs with orange yolks!

What they need from you depends on what they can scavenge from their run. My birds free range, meaning here that they are in the pasture all day. They eat grass, bugs, snakes, mice, and many other things they find. (they make their own dusting areas,, which I add hard wood ash to, and find their own grit) I do not keep out pans full of food, they get a hand full of grain just before roost time (when I go get the eggs). In bad weather I will give them a bit of high protein feed, just to be sure they get plenty. My birds are happy and healthy.

Yes they can eat grass (though it probably won't be their favorite). Make sure the grass hasn't recently been treated with fertilizers or weed killers. Unless they're used to having access to grass I also wouldn't give them longer grass clippings as you don't want them gorging on long blades which are harder for them to digest.

Long grass or a lot of grass can sometimes turn into impacted crops too.
