Eggs in incubator 8/22. Anyone else putting eggs in?

Quote:
I built an incubator this spring and had 1 unsuccessful hatch and 2 successful hatches. I have only had chickens since last fall so this is the first time I have had one go broody. I am really excited about how easy (I think) this is going to be.

Ok, I've heard of "letting them rest" before, but I'm not sure what it means? I read that if you order hatching eggs you should let them rest before putting them in. Why is that? Does it hurt for them to be out of the incubator that long?

Thanks!

I'm finding that hard to do! I do check the temp. often since I can't get my hands in there! So far it's been steady at 99.5. I'm using a Little Giant still air incubator. We shall see!

So even though I started this thread to be with incubating eggs. I figured while we all waiting for our eggs to hatch,

I would give you a video to watch if you want. I read on here about other people giving their chickens corn on the cob. So I decided I would give it a shot, boy did they love it. I thought there were gonna eat the cob the way they were attacking it.

Hope
everyone's incubation process is going well. I know in the next day or two I will be candleing mine to see what I got.

I put in 7 eggs -- 6 blue marans crossed with either BR, EE or CM. The other is a pure EE, I think.

Don't know if the hatch will be good. A lot of these eggs came from the refrigerator as I only have one blue marans. Should prove interesting.

If it makes you feel better, I'm having a hard time too.

Today I reweighed the eggs in grams instead of ounces, and of course had to candle them too - even though all I saw were yolks. How many more days???

It doesn't hurt to be out of the incubator a while before they go in as they don't start to develop until they are incubated, its only once they start developing that the conditions have to be perfect so as not to damage the development of the chick inside.
In the case of shipped eggs, letting them rest lets all the insides settle a bit from the journey and the constant motion. It makes sure everything is in the right place. I expect the reason is similar for not shipped eggs too. They should be resting either on their side and undisturbed (somewhere cool, not cold, so they don't start developing before they go in the incubator), or with the pointy end pointing down.

You are letting them rest from all the bouncing, throwing, slamming, knocking up next to, while they endure on their travels. I let rest 24 hours then put in turner for 24hrs then start them up.
