Are they first year pullets? First year pullets are known to lay well, very well, for about 9 months straight, from beginning point of lay. It is at that point, their second autumn, that they "crash", go into moult and take 6-9 weeks off to re-charge themselves.

Our reds have been laying like troopers, but we provide artificial light for them (14 hours a day).
