eggs left alone

my silkie hen leaves her eggs for 30 - 40 minutes or so at times. is that too long for them to hatch? my other hen sat on her constantly. I'm new to hatching eggs in any way. thanks

they have to leave them, to eat and drink and poop and dust bathe. You probably just haven't seen when the other one has left.

Quite right! Some of the new Brinsea incubators actually "turn off" for 30 minutes each day to simulate that very behaviour.

xs 2- they actually have 1 hour and 2 hour cool down periods that you can set them at.

I guess I don't have to worry about it. I went in the coop to find both hens sitting on the eggs and the chick the one hen has, was peaking out between the both of them.

Are they co-mothering? I just had to Japanese bantams do that and it worked out great. I was a little worried because it was the first time for both of them, but maybe that is why it worked!

My Spitzhauben co parented with my Japanese Bantam last October. She even covered mommy bantam at night...lol It was so cute. My black Jap banty didn't mind, so I let her.
