I give my hens organic layer feed and they free range sporadically in winter (in the summer when they're out everyday) and they're eggs are pretty unremarkable. I like that I know they are treated well and what they're eating but the yolks are ho-hum. My mom says when she grew up, their eggs were deep yellow or orange and tastes delicious. Can I get mine to be that way, too? I have BOs, an EE, BR, and some mixed breeds. Help!

This surprises me! What brand of feed and how old is it? Do you supplement with greens or anything through winter?
It's organic layer feed, Green Mt. Feeds and it's fresh as far as I can tell. I give then limited scraps because we have a raccoon problem. I will say, the yolks are usually firmer and larger but still nothing to write home about.

I've read that it's the omega 3s in their diet that make the eggs oranger. I feed organic too and have had a similar conversation with my husband. I think it's also because we were buying free range organic eggs before we got chickens of our own so by comparison, the bought eggs were already pretty great. I'm personally trying out another brand and will see if that makes any difference and will be following for other suggestions as well.

Yeah, I think the eggs in stores are just better now. I always bought pastured eggs in the store before I got chickens and they're like mine. I just want them to look amazing lol.
