Eggs taste weird

they may be from the same manufacturer, but there is definitely a difference in the two feeds. When they were eating the Dumor, they did not like it as well, their egg laying was more sporadic, and the smell of their waste was MUCH, MUCH more pronounced. I switched to Purina Layena and have subsequently switched to routinely feeding the Purina medicated chick starter per the veterinarian's recommendation due to the HUGE amount of coccidia in the soil here.

They don't waste nearly as much feed, their feather/skin condition is much better, and their eggs are larger and taste better. I do keep crushed oyster shell out for the hens free choice, as the chick starter doesn't contain as much calcium as the Layena. They also get treats at least daily, consisting of everything from scrambled eggs (their hands-down ALL TIME FAVORITE TREAT!), table scraps, a thawed bag of frozen mixed veggies (I catch them on sale and put several bags in the freezer for my house birds and for the outside poultry), bread, cereal that's either getting stale or that we're tired of, veggie trimmings, cabbage, and I sometimes buy a spaghetti or butternut squash and cook it for them just because they like them so well.

I did a bunch of research when I first got chickens Purina Layena was almost universally recommended.
Lots of people use different feeds for different reasons but I have yet to hear anything bad about Layena.

I'd have to go with the Dumor Food argument too.
We were feeding our hens Dumor from TSC and my parents noticed the eggs tasted "oniony" (I don't eat eggs so I haven't a clue) after trying all sorts of things we switched food one week because TSC didn't have anything but Purina. Now we'd never go back. Dumor is the TSC brand made by Purina, but it isn't the same ingredients or concentration of ingredients. Also, just a thought, we've noticed at our house, if you wash the eggs before you put them in the fridge they WILL absorb the odors from the fridge. Don't wash them or better yet don't put them in the fridge! They don't need it =] And if you put them in there with something strong smelling, like fish or onions, they somtimes absorb that flavor too. Good luck!

Also, whoever was talking about feeding their hens frozen grass clippings during the winter,

THAT IS THE BEST IDEA EVER. I can't wait to try it this summer!!!

I just happened to posted a minute ago on this thread and I am the one who feeds the grass I bagged and put in the freezer this summer. It lasts and lasts even after you defrost it. Sorry, this is off topic.......won't say anymore.

I only wash the eggs just before I use them. I do not wash them before putting them in the fridge.

Over the last week or so, we have noticed the eggs tasting better. At least not as "bloody" tasting as my husband says. The eggs are starting to get darker yolks too.

I wonder if it as because the hens were new to laying, and now they are getting it figured out?
