I have been giving my chickens tomatoes, cucumbers and zuchini from the garden. I have found a shelless egg 2 days in a row followed by a tiny shelled egg. The egg was just a little bigger than a robins egg. Is this from them eating to much vegatables and not enough layena. Has anyone seen this happen?

I am no expert, but I had this problem - it has been solved by not letting them have treats/veg etc until early afternoon. That way they fill up on their proper food first, as they will favour the other stuff and not get all the calcium they need to form the shell. Limestone flour added to their meal helps, as does free access to oyster shell.

I've only had this happen once. I agree that they shouldn't get any treats at all until late afternoon. Proper chicken food is formulated so that it provides all the nutrition they need. If they have the choice of treats or proper food, they'll go for the treats and not get a properly balanced diet.

Are they just starting to lay? They usually have a "practice" egg or two before they start coming out normal. Just a thought...
