I was told that you can tell the gender that a chick will be by the shape of the egg, pointed would be a cockrel and rounded would be a pullet. Is there any fact to this? Also if you have several breeds, does the chick carry more traits of the Men or the Rooster?

Thanks! Deb

That's an old wive's tale. You can't tell the gender of a chick by looking at an egg. The most reliable way to sex a young chick is by vent sexing (works on all breeds except for maybe bantams), feather sexing (but this only applies to certain breeds! e.g. Leghorns) or if the chick is sex-linked, by looking at it's down color (auto-sexing) or the head spot (if present and an applicable breed).

By 5-6 weeks you should be able to spot any cockerels that pop up, so when your chicks are that age you can post pictures here to see what gender they are.

Hi there, welcome to BYC! :frow

That's PURE fallacy. ;)

But.. keep track of your results and report them on one of the many threads regarding the subject. :pop

When breeding chickens whether or not the offspring get certain genes for the dame or the sire depends on WHICH gene we are discussing. :)
