One of my girls has started laying eggs. I got them in March and was told they were 2-3 weeks old. I am so excited. It has been very hot here in Illnois near St. Louis. She laid the egg outside the box in the coop. How would can I teach them to lay in the boxes?
they get to free roam in a fenced yard but are confined when we are not home.

Sometimes they get surprised by the egg, but usually within a week, they find their way to the boxes. You can put wooden eggs, easter eggs filled with rocks and glued shut or golf balls in the nest to encourage them to lay there.

I would just put golfballs in my nest boxes and they should start to lay there.

we got three eggs so far-2 outside the coop and yesterday one in the box. we put egg shaped rocks in all the nest boxes. oh the fresh eggs were so cute two were kind of small and the third was bigger.

Yes, they will gradually get bigger over time. Then you may see another size increase after their first adult molt. (roughly 18 months of age)
