Hello everyone!
I'm a new member here (not all that unusual...) and I've wanted chickens for years. (There's a photo of me holding a hen and grinning like the happiest person on earth in the middle of winter). And, after heated discussions on if chickens will work in a small urban lot, I've won the battle. So, as of next year we are getting chickens! The breeds that I want are an Australorp, Easter-Egger, Dorking and Welsummer. We are probably getting them next June, so eggs will come along sometime in November. The coop plan that I have concocted appears to be easy to clean, is insulated (cold northeastern climates require special attention) allows 4 square feet per bird, has 2 nestboxes, and 70 square feet of run space. We are planning on the deep litter method, and so the design includes a dutch door (open the top for standard food, water, and litter scattering and the bottom for deep cleanings). I am terribly excited, and so it looks like you will all be hearing a lot from me.
Sincerely yours,
ThePrancingPullet
