Eglu Go with 3m run for Isa Browns

Hi,
I’m looking at an Eglu Go with a 3m run for 4 isa browns

their website suggests this is big enough but I want to be sure that the chickens are happy. Can you advise?

If you want happy chickens I would suggest to go for at least 40m² of nicely structured run space and a real coop made of phenolic resin coated/film coated plywood used for wagon and trailer construction. This will even come not as costly and will serve you for years to come.

Typically, prefabricated coops grossly exaggerate the capacity of their coops and runs.
Chickens need a minimum of 4 sq ft per bird in the coop and 12 sq ft of space per bird in the run. If it meets those minimums or is even larger, you should be all set.

Yep, probably not. Eglus are VERY expensive, and I bet that for less than that you could build them a plenty large coop and run, with space to add more chickens in the future!

I think the Eglu Go would be small for 4 hens. If you want an Omlet coop, consider the Eglu Cube and a larger run. I have one, and I really like it (easy to clean, no mites or rot, portable, etc.). That said, they're pricey. If you have the skills and interest to build something, you can get a lot of great ideas from the BYC forums. Good luck!

I would say it is not big enough but it also depends on your overall setup. I have an Eglu Cube for 4 large fowl Buckeyes (they're 5 weeks old now, dang they are great!). I think the Cube is larger than the Eglu Go; the Cube is about 10 and 1/2 sq ft in there, some of which is a nesting box. I can't see putting more than 4 or possibly 5 birds in there.

But my Cube is intended for roosting only; it also has the 3 meter run which is about 31 sq. ft., and that's not big enough for a stationary run for 4 birds but I am moving them around in summer months and doing a little supervised free-ranging and chicken handling training (for me and the chicks!) for the time being. For winter they will have the 3x2 meter walk-in run attached, giving them an additional 63 sq ft. I plan on doing a composting litter system in there to keep things interesting for them and hopefully easy for me. If something were to happen and I can't move them the two runs together gives them 94 sq ft to move around in.

So it depends on what else you have for them. There are cheaper alternatives but nothing exactly like an Eglu - I read about a sturdy Rubbermaid dual-walled garden shed that someone posted about making into a coop; that could provide some of what Omlet offers - the two walls providing good summer and winter insulation, and the plastic being easy to clean and keep dry. You would have to have some skills to turn it into a coop, and then make an enclosed run for it. But it is not a tractor (unless you can put wheels on? Use a moveable fence with aviary netting on top? Hmmm).
