Eglu Panic

Hi there! I'm new to chickens and I've ordered an Eglu.
Now that it's been ordered, I'm wondering if there's anyone here who has used a small sized Eglu (not the Cube)through the winter as their chickens' sole home. I'm in Colorado, and it gets cold and snows here. A friend has two (possibly three) Wyandottes that he's willing to part with as soon as I get my Eglu assembled.
Will the chickens be okay in there? I read the ads that said they are suitable for cold climates, but I'd like to hear it from someone who doesn't work for the company! Anyone here able to set my mind at ease?

I think if you put straw bales around the coop, they should be ok. They are winter hardy birds. Although I've never used the Eglu.

agreed. point it away from the coldest winds in your area. here in Michigan, i point my coops away from the North.

use a deep litter, well, as much as you can with the Eglu anyway and that will help also. you can do two bales thick with the straw.

Here is a picture of my Eglu during a cold New England winter. As you can see the girls were perfectly content with their accomadations.

I've since upgraded to a cube, but not because I didn't like the Eglu but because I wanted to expand my flock. The only issus I had was the water freezing, but a galvanised waterer and heated base sorted that out just fine.

The Eglu is insulated with a double layer of thick plastic and claims to be suitable for both hot and cold weather. It is used all over England and it can get pretty cold there, so I think it will be fine.

BTW - The Eglu really is a small coop and if you plan on keeping your chickens inside it at all times you should really only keep two large chickens, or possibly three if they're bantams. If you do plan on letting them free-range, 3 large chickens will be fine.

Thank you all so much! The pictures really helped a lot! I'm planning on starting with only a couple of hens, so I'll have to save the Cube for later...when I know I'll want lots of the girls around!!

Those Eglus are great. I love mine. It saved our duck quite regularly before he flew away! What color is yours? Mine is pink.

I waffled between green and pink, and pink won! They say it should be here by the 28th!
