Here's my intro. We live on a farm in the mountains of Washington State. Last week we just got our first set of chicks. They have been so much fun already that I can't believe I didn't get them sooner.

When our chicks are old enough they will (hopefully) be free range chickens. However, we have a good number of predators here and I will be asking lots of questions about the best coop situation for the chickens. Ideally they could live in the barn at night but I don't know if raccoons would go in there and bother them or not.

In any event, we have eight pullets of different breeds. Two of them are a "mystery" so we'll have to wait to see what they look like when they grow up. I've enjoyed reading the site so far! Thanks in advance to everyone who is willing to help the newbies on here. (My expertise is in horses and cats...but I'm looking forward to becoming savvy with chickens as well.)

Welcome to BYC. If you free range you have to expect loses - I'm guessing you probably have the full compliment of predators from Hawks, to cougars, to Bears - with raccoons, and fox thrown in for bad measure.

Please go to "where am I, where are you," in the social forum to find and post on your state thread.
Washington has a very active, fast moving thread - I'm sure you could find someone near you to tell you just what you are facing in terms of predator attack.

The Learning Center is very informative and a great place to start. Also check out predators, coop sections and raising baby chicks.

Congratulations on your new babies

The girls - from left to right
White leghorn, Wyandotte??, Barred Rock (I think), Welsummer, two Ameraucanas, mystery pullet - might be a golden sex link, Rhode Island Red.

Five of the chicks were in a "free package" so we didn't get to pick them out. They are very sweet anyway. :)

Thanks Drumstick Diva! We have tons of wildlife, but I'm mainly concerned about the raccoons, bobcats and coyotes. The bears have not come near the house, and we have a fairly wooded property so I'm hoping the chickens will be safe from hawks. We have a lot of red-tailed hawks as well as Eagles, ravens and crows.

Welcome to BYC!

Your babies are adorable!

You might want to do some reading in our learning center here on BYC for lots of great reads on all the aspects of keeping poultry including a section on predators and how to protect your flock...

Enjoy your new babies and welcome to our flock!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! What cute chicks! X3, you'll need to have a secure coop for them or modify part of the barn into a secure area, raccoons will wind up in the barn after them sooner or later. You might consider electric fence or electric poultry netting if true free range is to dangerous for them with bobcats and coyotes. Check out the Predator forum for suggestions on dealing with them.
