This hen was from my original flock from eight years ago. Last survivor. I figured I’d let her stick around even though she wasn’t laying much. I now have several more spent hens that I’ll have to cull, but that can wait awhile. My shipment of new female chicks won’t arrive until late February, then they’ll be inside growing for a few months, too.
This old BSL had lots and lots of fat. Check this picture out.
And this one.
Her back fat was about an inch thick, too.
I’ve read and heard old hens make the best stock, so I’m making some stock for ramen noodles. My wife makes homemade ramen noodles often. If this turns out okay I’ll post the recipe.
Probably gonna have a two inch thick fat layer in the pot.
Anyone else try to cook a stew hen?
