Sociology and anthropology, when applied in a scientific manner, involve looking at solid patterns and data...not trying to extrapolate an isolated experience to fit personal biases. Of course, both have been used to do just that many a time over the centuries, and I can see that desire is still going strong.

Absolutely disgusting video and incident. Hope more good comes of it than bad.

Kind of hard to do a double blind experiment when physical punishment comes with jailtime.

I agree that love and faith in God can serve as a powerful foundation for an orderly society. However, religion can be twisted by the corrupt to become repressive and lead to serious abuse of others. This is true regardless of the faith -- Christian, Muslim, or any religion. Where I live, in Salem, Massachusetts, in 1692 the Puritan Christian society here tried, tortured and executed innocent women and one man, on the accusation of witchcraft and allegiance with the Devil. Religious faith is not a guarantee of good, just and righteous behavior.

Each generation seems to get worse and worse.

I read the Bible a lot and one of the themes that is revealed in scripture is the further man moves from God the worse man gets. Raising kids in a godless society produces exactly the child the Bible says it will create. Now before someone says "well then all kids raised in a godly home should do good" we all know that that is not the case but when a child is taught right from wrong they now posess the ability to make the right choice based on a higher power than themselves not from a tradition where before without that revelation they will draw from society or what another man says or worse from thier own idea of right and wrong.

These kids behavior does not surprise me one bit and I will bet it will get worse before it gets better.

About as strong as mans' ability to not see the forest except for the trees. As you well know what sounds good in theory is not always best in reality. I would take the advice of one mother who has raised one kid over a woman who has raised no kids and read a thousand books.

In a thousand years your sociology will be the anthropology of another presumably smarter generation... repeating the same mistakes and thinking their way is better than the last group. We are all in the same box.

I agree with you about the video.

There are rather too many generalisations being drawn from one video and a few news reports. Judgements about all kids and adults cannot reasonably made from this story. For every story about a bad kid there's at least one about a good kid.

All that we know is:

1. A woman was taunted on a school bus by some kids. It looked like a very unpleasant episode.

2. She is said to be a monitor but whatever authority she had she didn't use it.

3. The driver didn't intervene.

4. We don't know how she had behaved towards the kids on that trip or previous ones.

5. She will receive a lot of money from donors and, perhaps, the school.

There's more to know about this incident and it still would not be proof that today's kids are evil.

I am offended by the religious comments that have been introduced into this thread and will report the next one that appears. They are against the rules of BYC. Posters get away too often with religious, usually Christian, platitudes and suggestions that people who are not Christian are bad. That's arrogant nonsense but when someone offers to disagree, there's a slap on the wrist from the Mods. Go be religious elsewhere, please.

If you are offended by comments from CHRISTIANS about GOD, that's too bad. Here in AMERICA we, have religous freedom.
Get over it!

Report to the Mods! That's a cop out! I get offended every day I leave my house with the things I see and hear. Am I going to call the police because I am "offended"? Please!! Get a life!

Of that I have no doubt...provided the mother echoed or in some way validated your worldview.

I'm not going to be tempted into an argument about a banned subject by an insult about religious freedom. There is as much such freedom where I come from and where I now live as there is anywhere else. I've merely done what I said I would do in the hope that the offending posts will be edited and the thread continue.
