Duck-duck-chicken!
So here is the setup for my energizer. Hard to get a pic because it’s tucked behind the nest box. Lol. You can see the bare ground wire coming out of the black terminal on the energizer, going to my ground rod (which is just a step in post) and then continuing on past the battery box to connect to the negative/ground wires I have on the perimeter of the pen.
The red terminal on the energizer has insulated lead out wire that is attached to my hot wire; I have 3 separate strands up, with a connector between them. If I have an issue with one wire, I disconnect it from the system and it stops causing problems until I can fix it.
The other cord you see goes to the little solar panel on the top of the fence.
Next, the pen to give you an idea on the placement for my particular setup. The critters that I usually have coming around are skunks, foxes, coyotes, other peoples dogs, barn cats, and the occasional wolf. The wolves and bears don’t usually come this close to the house so not as much of a concern, but they would still get a good shock if they did. I have 3 hot wires, one at the top, which is about 3.5’ high, one in the middle, and one about 4” off the ground. You can see the bare aluminum wire between the poly wire hot wires, those are the negative/ground wires.
another point to note, I’m renting the property, and although the landlords are awesome about the livestock, I still need to make sure it’s easy to adapt/change/take down quickly if necessary. This setup took me very little time to put together, and very little time to take down. It’s quite portable in all of its pieces.

this setup will not work with animals that jump over barriers, as there is no top to the pen. Coyotes, foxes and dogs don’t want to try to jump it because they can’t really see on the other side. They’d rather go under, which means they hit the bottom wire. The barn cats prefer to climb, and shock themselves on the middle and top wires usually. Skunks try to go under. Bobcats, lynx, and aerial preds could still get in here, but I don’t have issues with them so I didn’t set up barriers for them.
