My coop and run are just about done. HC apron done. But guess what came to visit. A bear.
Took my bird feeders out, and emptied the dumpster. Trash everywhere. Yes I know it's a bear. He's been spotted a few times this week, plus he left some fertilizer behind as well as footprints.

My 8 week old gal's are coming next weekend and I know I need more than HC to keep Yogi out.

So I need a electric fence. My main question is, does the hot wire need to be a continuous loop? Or can it be open ended?

I've got two 8' grounding rods I can use. However the odds of getting them driven more than 4' is unlikely as we've got rocks the size of a small car. I'll probably get 3 rods 3-4' deep.

I am in Upstate NY too, up on a hill full of hardpan clay and rocks. I used a steel fence post driver then a sledge hammer and drove my ground rods 5'10" down (2" left above ground to clamp on to).

You can buy lead out wire off Amazon; it's far less expensive that what TSC sells.

The fence chargers sold today are not continuous. They pulse. That way you do not get "stuck" on the wire.

You will want a heavy duty charger, one that is rated for large predators. I use 10,000 volts with 1.2 Joule output. It packs a wallop and make you say naughty things when you accidentally touch it.

You will want multi-strands for bear control. The following is a good video on how to do the installation correctly.

I have not had an issue with the bear that has visited my property. I don't know if she got a hit with the fence or not.

Good luck.
